See the Man in the Child

When I look at the name Samuel Colclouge and his rusted iron gravemarker, I imagine a weighty man brought down after a lifetime of struggles. But then I look at the dates and realize This is the gravesite of a baby.

KAMO Wife and Baby

If you know which serpentine road to follow, you will find the Japanese section of the Salt Lake City Cemetery. My initial belief was that these were likely former detainees from the internment camps here in Utah. In fact, the death dates on many of these graves predate World War II by a decade.

Emo's Grave

This is perhaps the most famous resident of the Salt Lake City Cemetery -- Jacob Moritz. You are looking at the legendary Emo's Grave. And what does his granite monument contain? Darkness.

Brain Family

I haunt the Salt Lake City Cemetery. Or I used to. For over a decade I've been captivated by this set of graves -- I find the name quite provoking. Indeed, the Brain family name inspired a short story that I still pull out and tinker with now and again. In the first photo I think I've actually caught Edward Brain's aura!

Over Shit Creek and out of sight.

Up Shit Creek

As I walked up the riverway, I spotted a small encampment made up of trailers and campers. An old man with dark glasses stood atop a ladder stapling black sheets and blankets over the west-facing windows of the main trailer. My feet scuffled through the gravel and alerted him to my approach. He came down off the ladder to speak to me.

'What's up?'
'Howdy.'
'Just out for a stroll?'
'Taking pictures of the river.'
'That ain't a river -- it's a sewage treatment system that runs from Utah Lake to the Great Salt Lake.'

Crime Scene Under the Freeway

Under the 400 South freeway onramp. Police officers hang crime scene tape around a mysterious dead body. I happened upon this scene the first day I had my camera (these are in fact shots two and three in the history of the camera) -- I was stopped at the red light en route to work when this ghastly event unfolded.

Red White and Blue

Scenes from the 400/500 West area. This is my first roll of color film so I was really happy with the saturation of the colors -- especially the blue skies and red figures. The scan of image 2 (the railroad tracks) doesn't do justice to the redness of the tracklights in the distance.
